so I opened up my hard drive and smeared the insides with butter to make it run faster but when I put it back in smoke came out of my computer and now it doesn't boot... help please!!!!

Given a week and a handful of fake accounts on some big Mac forums, I wonder what other bizarre witch-doctor fixes could be made to take root.

Yes, you'll find a lot of absurd folk remedies on those sites. Another one you'll see a lot with OS updates is "install the Combo update!" These are things that *have* helped certain specific problems in the past, but people treat them as cure-alls now.

Crazy minds think alike

Ah, this is why I love Crazy Apple Rumors. In the same post they not only make fun of the repair permissions cult, but they also suggest making your computer run better by inserting—wait for it—butter.

I like to think Crazy Apple Rumors is something I could do if only I were a bit funnier. Clearly my heart is in the right place.
